Ground Gravity
Applications in Mineral Exploration:
- Identifies anomalous excess mass: Massive sulphides, chromite ore, iron ore, stockworks, barite deposits, etc.
- Identifies anomalous mass deficit: Coal, lignite, salt deposits, placer, karst, etc.
- Screens for conductors with anomalous mass (e.g., graphite vs. sulphide)
- Reveals the converse, where there may be a conductor but an absence of significant excess mass that could correspond to alteration, shear or fault zones.
- Estimates tonnage of VMS conductors independent of their shape.
- Regional geological mapping: Pge exploration, sedimentary basin, batholith, diapir, karst, graben, etc.
- Conductive overburden has no masking effect.
- Significant sensitivity to bedrock topography (may be resolved with geo-electrical imaging survey).
- Virtually unlimited depth (see Geo-Echoes No. 10).
- Detection of buried (excess) mass superimposed on regional gradient.
- Accurate elevation survey produced concurrently.
